IMDS

The International Material Data System (IMDS) is an online system used by automotive industry suppliers to report material and chemical substance content regarding parts supplied to their customers in response to the European Union’s End of Life Vehicle (ELV) Directive (Directive 2000/53/EC).

IMDS is managed by DXC Technology and is sponsored by the majority of the world’s automotive manufacturers.  IMDS allows a supplier to receive material and substance content information on the parts and materials from their sub-suppliers and consolidate this information in order to pass it along the supply chain. The goal of IMDS is for the automotive OEMs to receive a full disclosure of all the substances that are contained within the vehicle as it rolls off the assembly line or hits the show room floor.

The data submitted through IMDS is placed into a Material Data Sheet (MDS) and submitted to customers.  Increasingly, companies within the automotive sector are requiring acceptance of an MDS as part of the Production Part Approval Process (PPAP) Warrant.  As many in the automotive sector are aware, without an approved PPAP Warrant the payments for tooling and initial orders are not released.  Therefore, failure to properly submit IMDS information can lead to a delay in the receipt of payments.
