Issue: Substance percentage range does not meet IMDS Recommendation 001, Rule 4.5.4.B

Rule 4.5.4.B specifies the allowable difference between the X and Y values in a percentage range for a substance as follows:

Percentage Range (X % to Y %) Values M = Maximum Allowable Difference (M = Y % – X %)
0 ≤ X% ≤ 7.5M ≤ 3
7.5 < X% ≤ 20M ≤ 5
20 < X% ≤ 100M ≤ 10

There are exceptions to these percentage ranges:

1.       A basic substance as part of a material that is defined with a larger range in a public norm (If there is a Committe published MDS that represents the material, that MDS should be used for the material.)

2.       A basic substance as part of a material is defined with a larger range in an inhouse specification,   These norms are specific to a particular car manufacturer’s material specifications. This in-house specification must be part of the delivery conditions.

3.       Basic substances in MDSs published by the Steering Committee (Supplier: IMDS-Committee, ID 423; IMDS-Committee/ILI Metals, ID 18986 or Stahl und Eisen Liste, ID 313).

4.       Materials containing substances with a natural range higher than those given in the table.

Action Required:

If your material meets exception 1 AND there is a Committee published MDS for the material that appropriately represents your material, use the Committee published MDS.

If your material meets exception 1 and there is NOT a Committee published MDS for the material, add a remark* to the material explaining that it meets this exception to Rule 4.5.4.B.

If your material meets exception 2, cite the in-house norm under the norms and standards section of the material details.

If your material contains a naturally occurring variation in the percentage of a substance that exceeds the percentages in the rule, include a remark* in your material citing this exception.

If your material does not meet one of the exceptions, review your material composition and revise as necessary.

If your material is correctly represented and does not meet one of the exceptions, contact your customer to discuss a solution to this issue.

*Remember, any remark you include is considered part of your legal declaration of the material and carries potential legal liability if it is incorrect.
